I purchased this head along with the Slik 614CF tripod while on a vacation in California. I needed a good travel tripod for my Pentax K20D DSLR and my Canon HF100 HD camcorder.
The amazing thing about this tripod is that the top of the head can be loosened for swiveling a camera 90 degrees to tilt the camera into a portrait mode. What I discovered it that this plate, when unlocked, allows my video camera to pan very smoothly. I find this an added bonus and have never seen this feature on a tripod head before. I have other tripods with “fluid” heads that pan at the bottom of the head, swiveling the entire head with the camera. But this head has a plate at the top that unlocks, and just the top plate swivels around 360 degrees!
The head also has a dual locking mechanism that allows vertical and horizontal movement when the tension is loosened. This makes for quick correction when shooting still photos.
The quick release plate is well made and works very well too!
All in all, the quality metal construction and excellent craftsmanship insures that this head will last for years of use!
